Chex Chippendale
003-CC-01 - 11/1/03
The inspiration for this clock originated with two hand-hewn beams, one oak and the other walnut, salvaged from a century-old barn. I wanted to retain the serious feeling of age in the wonderful natural distressing in the wood, but then counter it with the whimsey of a checkered chippendale-like shape. I continued in a whimsical vein with a dartboard-like clock face under a magnifying lens, and chose to mount the top on etched copper pipes because they reminded me of a calliope.
I tried to pull it back in a serious direction with the fine cabinetry in the base, but then carved my version of an egg-and-dart ionic capital to use as the foot, which may or may not be interpreted as cartoon-like wheels implying sideways motion.
