Thorn On A Stem

005-ts-01 - 6/6/05

I grew up next to a field bordered on one side with a fence-row full of honey locust trees (covered with thorns). Among the neighborhood kids there was an unspoken rule not to tackle out-of-bounds on that side of the field in our pick-up football games.

I often go jogging near that field to clear my mind and work out design ideas.   On one of those days, I became particularly fascinated with the thorns.  As menacing as they were, they were also very alluring and tempting to touch.  I wanted to find a way to use their strong visual presence — thinking they were sort of the opposite of flower petals.

The wooden parts are cottonwood and black walnut. Brass rods connect the top to the base. The thorns are honey locust, from my old neighborhood. ~ tung oil varnish, quartz clock
